COCHLEAR IMPLANT   1. Sound is picked up by a directional microphone.2. Sound is sent from the microphone to the speech processor.3. The speech processor analyzes and digitizes the sound into coded signals.4. Coded signals are sent to the transmitter via radio frequency.
5. The transmitter sends the code across the skin to the internal implant.6. The internal implant converts the code to electrical signals.7. The signals are sent to the electrodes to stimulate the remaining nerve fibers.8. The signals are recognized as sounds by the brain, producing a hearing sensation. Details at http://www.cochlear.com BASIC FUNCTION OF THE EYE Our eyes catches light from the surroundings and transform it into nerve impulses which can be interpreted by the brain. The eyeball is covered by several membranes The Retina When the light reaches the retina it penetrates the thin membrane and is reflected onto the rods and cones. Through the photoreceptors the light energy is transformed into electrical nerve signals. The rods are concentrated outside the centre of the retina . The cones are concentrated in the macula. The Eye with Retina The total retina is a circular disc of approximately 42 mm diameter. In the center of the retina is the optic nerve. The center-most portion of the macula (the fovea) dose not contain any blood vessels and is called the foveal avascular zone. The fovea is an area where cone photoreceptors are concentrated at maximum density with exclusion of the rods.
Diseases of the Eye Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) RP is the name of a group of inherited diseases that affect the retina. They are characterized by a gradual breakdown and degeneration of the photoreceptors.
As yet, there is no known cure for RP.
Macular Degeneration (AMD) Genetically Related. Cones in Macula region degenerate. Loss or damage of central vision. Common among old people NORMAL EYE Retinitis Pigmentosa Macular Degeneration TYPE OF VISION PROSTHESES There are three potential sites where electrical stimulation could be reasonably attempted to provide an artificially induced visual sensation: The retina optic nerve and brain Cortical Implants.
